Winter Weekend Guide to Galveston, TX

February 19, 2019 Blog, Food, wanderlust

Looking for a weekend getaway in Texas? A day trip or any other excuse to get away? Look no further than Galveston!

There are so many things to do in Galveston in the winter. Galveston is a beach town located near Houston, Texas. I went on a mini family vacation to Galveston right before Christmas, which is a lovely time of year to visit.

Food and Resturants

Shrimp N Stuff

Shortly after arriving in Galveston we headed to Shrimp N Stuff, which serves fresh and delicious seafood, the kind the locals eat. It’s a great place to order fried seafood in Galveston. It’s a casual dining restaurant where you order at a counter. All the workers were welcoming, and you can sit rather large parties here. I would recommend if you’re looking for great seafood in Galveston.

Nick’s Kitchen and Beach Bar

Dinner was at Nick’s Kitchen and Beach Bar (3828 Seawall Blvd) and had a little something for everyone. For an appetizer, we had queso and all ordered various dishes. Our favorites included the crispy buffalo shrimp sandwich, fried shrimp and the “cardiac arrest” burger.

Nick’s is connected to Gaido’s Seafood restaurant and they are owned by the same company. Nick’s is the more casual dining option compared to Gaido’s.

Miller’s Seawall Grill

For brunch, on Sunday I dined with my friend Samantha at Millers, located right off the seawall at 1824 Seawall Blvd in Galveston.

I had a cheeseburger and Samantha had lump crab benedict. Service was good, and the wait wasn’t too long. Savory homecooked taste to all the food. I’ve been to Millers a few times over the years and everything I’ve had here has been delicious. The wait can sometimes be long, but worth it.

Things to do

Dickens on the Strand

What is Dickens on the Strand? Think Renaissance festival meets Christmas. Lots of things to buy and good food to eat. It’s a great place to eat fair type food.

Moody Gardens

First, we explored the Ice Land exhibit which is something very spectacular to see. The room is entirely made of ice!

I would recommend going to the Ice Land part first. Even on a Saturday afternoon, we didn’t have to wait at all.  At 7 p.m. on Saturday the line was over an hour long to get in. The Christmas lights at Moody Garden are amazing and it was neat to walk through all of them.

On Sunday, we rode around taking photos, predominantly of the Miata I was driving.

Thank you to Mazda for sending me the cutest 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata to Cruze around Galveston in. This lovely car is so fun to drive, plus it gets amazing gas mileage. It was super fun to put the top down and drive down the seawall in. Yes here in Texas, even in December, we can put the top down lol. I was really impressed with the gas mileage in this Miata and I ended up spending less on gas than I normally would have driving to Galveston. That’s always a plus in my book.

Where we stayed

We rented the cuuuutest Airbnb. It had 3 bedrooms and was large enough for the whole family to stay in. My favorite part of the house was the outdoor sitting area. This Airbnb is perfect for families looking to spend most of their time at the beach during a trip to Galveston since it’s located just 1 block away from the beach.

I’ve actually never been to Texas (other than the Dallas airport) but it’s on my list!
