Organize your items
Moving as a college student can be different for everyone. If you still have a place at your parents’ house then you will want to focus on items you will need on a semester-by-semester basis. Something to consider when packing is the seasonal clothing you will need. Using plastic containers to organize your wardrobe by season can be a helpful way to organize your items and only bring the items you will need now or soon.
Rent a storage unit
Dorm rooms can be small! If you are unable to leave items that will not fit in your dorm room at your parent’s or family members’ house, consider renting a storage unit. Even if you only have a small number of items, storage rental businesses have small storage units that will fit your needs and leave your new living space a lot less cluttered. Shop around on prices for an affordable storage unit and be sure to ask about a discount for college students!
Get rid of things you don’t need
When it comes to packing to move it is the perfect time to get rid of items that you no longer use. Have honest conversations with yourself. Is this an item you have used recently? Will you use this item in the future? Is this an item that you will need in the current or upcoming season? Does this clothing item still fit? Donate or sell items that you no longer need or use.
Coordinate with Roommates
As a college student, it is highly likely you will be sharing your room, living space, or bathroom with a roommate. Talk with your roommate about who will bring what items. There is no need to bring duplicates of certain items that will be used in shared spaces. Discuss plans with your roommate prior to moving to save time on moving unneeded items.
Moving Supplies
When preparing for a move there are certain items you will need to move. Certain items like boxes, tape, and markers are items you will definitely need to pack up your items. Buying boxes and tape in bulk can help you save money while packing to move. Checking local grocery stores and apps like NextDoor can also be a way to find free boxes for your move. Utilizing reusable bags (especially IKEA bags!!), laundry hampers, and other items to carry items can be helpful in your move.

Cleaning Supplies
When moving into a new space, always try to set time to clean the space before you start moving your items in. Pack items ahead of time separately that you will use to clean your new space.
- Mop and sweep hardwood floors
- Disinfect bathroom, clean tubs, sinks, toilets
- Vacuum any carpet
Overall moving can be stressful but take a deep breath because it will not last forever! Planning ahead can be the key to making your move as a college student go smoothly.
