Traveling can be stressful. It can be even more stressful while you are injured. Two weeks before my trip to NYC I broke my ankle. I almost thought about canceling the trip completely.
Luckily I was able to walk in a boot without crutches before I headed to NYC. Still, being injured and traveling came with its struggles. Planning ahead can be super helpful and make your trip a success.
1. If you are going to fly, make sure your doctor says it’s okay.
I would highly suggest this to others but should admit that my doctor wasn’t crazy about me flying while injured.
He had asked that during the flight I try to walk or move my ankle in my seat as much as possible to keep the blood flowing.
I would just suggest that you talk with your doctor and make a plan that best suits your injury.
2. Pack light.
Try to only pack a carry-on.
I would highly suggest packing as light as possible. The easiest way is in a backpack or something you can easily pull (if you are able). For a purse, something like a crossbody bag is best.
3. If you are going to need assistance at the airport, arrange for it ahead of time.

This can really help people that are on crutches. Airport employees will meet you with a wheelchair and help you with your bags.
Also please keep in mind that if you use this service, please tip these people. Keeping extra cash for situations like this is always great.
4. Arrive early.
Give yourself plenty of time to arrive at the airport and get situated.
While I didn’t use assistance at the airport, it did take me longer to get place to place in my boot, so arriving early was key.
5. Dress as simple as possible.
It can be a pain already going through security, but going through while injured can make it an even longer process. I had to be helped through after TSA wanted to scan my boot on its own. This took extra time and arriving early really made me not stress as much.
6. First on, last off.
Keep in mind that if you are allowed first on the plane, typically you are the last off. I don’t really see this being a big deal, but it is something to keep in mind.
7. Plan ahead to have a friend or family member meet you at your destination if possible.
Having a friend meet me at the airport was super helpful. She helped carry my bag and together we found the way out of the airport and onto the train.
Overall I would suggest calling your travel agent or whatever mode of transportation you are taking ahead of time to ensure your trip goes as smoothly as possible.
Hope you have a great trip no matter what the circumstances.
